Merijam Roelofs is the creative vision and voice behind Folk Project. Her passion initially ignited with the love for huipiles and other traditional Central American textiles, and the stories behind each one with the women who weave them. She has created Folk Project out of a desire to share their beauty and to mix traditional craft with contemporary aesthetics. Weaving together stories of artistry from the new and the old worlds, Folk Project is creating statement pieces that honor the story of folk culture throughout artisans work. The unique one of a kind handmade furnishings and décor seamlessly incorporate the legacy of Mayan and Andes handcrafted arts, expressing ancestral stories and spiritual beliefs. Each coveted piece is designed to awaken emotions that resonate in the contemporary world. While traditional know-how tends to disappear, Folk Project aims at reversing the trend by supporting time honored tradition and the painstaking craft of hand weaving. Folk Project has been traveling to Chiapas Mexico and Guatemala annually for over ten years to develop long standing relationships with the weavers. Folk Project is committed to supporting the women artisans, their families, their communities and their traditions in fair exchange for their magnificent wares.The act of sharing is rising.
