THE HISTORY Originally founded by Johann Gottlieb Böker in 1828, Boker's Bitters gained worldwide popularity as the best bitters of the golden age of cocktails. Boker's was the famous brand favored by Professor Jerry Thomas, featured throughout his book, "How to Mix Drinks or The Bon Vivant's Companion," now recognized as the world's first bartender's guide. Although unmatched when used in refined bar drinks, the devastating effect of the Volstead Act, commonly known as Prohibition, closed the Boker company in the 1920s. By tasting and analyzing original samples, referencing historical medical guides, as well as unearthing court records and a series of counterfeit recipes dating as far back as 1853, I used these findings to reformulate a historically accurate representation of Boker's bitters and bring them back.
