Description
Hand-woven strips of hand-spun cotton are first sewn together into panels. Then there are two methods to create designs on the cloth. The first is the tie-dye method, where designs are stitched into the fabric; when finished, the cloth is dipped in natural indigo. Once dry, the threads are cut to reveal the final design. The second method uses handmade stencils or stamps to impregnate wax into the fabric before it is dipped into the indigo. The easiest way to tell which method was used is to look at the back of the panel and see is the design is visible. If it is, it's the tie-dye method. These panels have many uses in West Africa: clothing, head wraps, baby carriers, etc. Indigo belongs to the pea family. Dimensions: 60" x 44"
