The characteristic apartment buildings that characterize the district of St. Hanshaugen were built from the 1880s, and together with the park form the basis of what many believe is one of Oslo's most beautiful areas. At the end of the 18th century, St. Hanshaugen was part of the town park, and the knouse itself where the park is located today was, among other things, used as a pasture and burial ground for horses, which gave it the nickname "Mærrahaugen". From 1875 to 1918, the park at St. Hanshaugen housed a Norwegian bear, a Swedish bear, a mother lion with two cubs, a small herd of monkeys and a bunch of exotic birds. The zookeeper lived in what is today called the Bear House, while the bear cage has been converted into what is today a gazebo.
