These baskets are finely woven by hand by Batwa women in south-western Uganda. After living several hundred years in the Bwindi Forest, the Batwa (known as the Pygmy) were driven out in 1991. Since then, the Batwa, marginalized, have lived on the edge of the forest. Basket weaving has become an important activity in their economy. These baskets are a symbol of hope for the future of the Batwa people.
