Description
“A mighty woman with a torch” Emma Lazarus is the author of the famed poem placed at the bottom of the Statue of Liberty. While most people are familiar with her most famous line, “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” In Emma’s poem, the speaker of that line is “a mighty woman with a torch.” In real life, Emma was herself a mighty woman that used her torch to help Jewish refugees facing death and anti-semitism in their home countries in Europe. Her poem was used to help fundraise for the construction of the Statue of Liberty. Both the statue and Emma’s words have become foundational symbols of American culture. Made with leather
