Dunure castle's origins probably date back to at least the 1200s when a stone keep was built on an easily defensible rocky outcrop overlooking the Firth of Clyde by the Kennedy Clan. Situated on the Ayrshire Coastal path which runs along the coast for 84 miles from Glenapp to Skelmorlie,. the now ruined castle appeared in Season 3 of Outlander as Silkies Island (with a little help from CGI!)
