Paperback, 40 Pages: Today, street art is often associated with figures like Banksy and Shepard Fairey, who have gained fame and fortune from what is now seen as a trendy art form. In this context, it’s easy to view street art as compromised—its anti-capitalist potential dulled by commodification. The term “street art” only became widespread in recent decades, when savvy capitalists recognized its market value. But street art has long served as a form of subversive communication, a revolutionary tool for the oppressed. To reclaim its radical potential, we must look to historical examples that were largely free from the commercial pressures of today. This study explores the relationship between street art and revolution through three key case studies, chosen from different historical moments and regions of the world. By examining their scope, style, and impact, we gain insight into how street art has served movements for liberation—and how it still can.
