Kevin "Smitty" Smith’s passion for handcrafted, premium bbq sauce was birthed from a combination of healing after an injury and his love of the outdoors. Originally from Southeast, Missouri, the Army brought him to Tennessee. Smitty's Beard Sauce was born in the Volunteer State and is still proudly bottled and distributed here. While transitioning from the military as a 101st Rakkasan combat Veteran, it was recommended he find a hobby that would get him around people. So he joined a beer brewing club! In this group he found some of the same camaraderie experienced in the Army. Smitty liked the idea of turning nothing into something. He was drawn to things he could taste, smell and work on with his hands. When the club had a sauce making contest, he thought “this should be fun, why not?” After a first first place win, a business was born. Folks loved the flavor and ingredients. It was different than the traditional thick, ketchup -based product you find on grocery store shelves. He believed in using superior ingredients and peppers for flavor, taking the sauce to the next level. Quality and service remains the cornerstone for everything Smitty's touches, and we believe it's another reason the sauce is so dang good. One has now grown to four. Sweet-N-Spicy, Ghost Pepper, Scotch Bonnet and Beard Scorcher can be found in businesses across the US as well as in Scheels Sporting Goods stores. Read their story
