About Brouwerij de Smokkelaar

The smuggling village of Overdinkel is located in the far east of Twente, right on the edge of Germany, behind Losser. In the last century, when the European borders were still closed, coffee, shoes, butter and clothing were frequently smuggled here across the border with Germany. This provided a nice extra pocket money for the villagers. The wildest stories are still around. In the night, residents regularly listened to the sound of shots fired along the border and hoped that the next morning, their father or brother would come home in one piece. They were Wild West scenes, but in the East of the country... This smuggling past inspired Brouwerij de Smukkelaar's beers.Read their story
