WALKYTALKIES are found and designed by Nelleke van der Burg, graphic designer and art-director, located in The Hague, The Netherlands. The inspiration for WALKYTALKIES was her daughter. When the little girl was about 3 years old, she decided to create a sock puppet. A sock, beads, yarn, a lot of creativity and the sock friend was born. When finished, the toddler wore it also on her foot and tried to put her shoe on. Because of the rich decorations, that didn’t fit and led into a lot of frustration. Nelleke saw it happen and asked herself: ‘Why can’t a sock be a puppet and vice versa at the same time?’ The solution was surprisingly easy: use all the elements of a sock in a smart way: eyes on the instep, mouth on the foot pad and the body on the leg. Now, wear the sock on your foot and ‘walk’. Put it on your hand with the thumb in the heel and ‘talk’: WALKYTALKIES.
