My idea for Safe & Shine originated in 2018 in Switzerland, where I lived with my husband Dan and our daughter Frida until mid-2021. When Frida was four, she started in the Swiss kindergarten, in Swiss German called Chindsgi. Here, on the first day the children get a so-called Chindsgi-Bändel handed over. This is a mandatory, orange reflex ribbon, which is worn outside clothes, so that kindergarten children are easily recognisable in traffic. I thought it was amazing to see how proud Frida and her friend Leonie walked off to the nursery with their reflex tapes on. Over time, I've become aware of how exposed and invisible pedestrians and cyclists are in traffic — especially when it gets dark. I missed a reflex tape to myself and really to everyone else so that we could light up in the dark and be seen, thus raising our safety in traffic. The reflex products I saw all around were good, but they were more intended for and designed as safety equipment in workplaces or sports equipment and less useful for people who would like to light up in everyday life but don't want to wear a reflex vest on their clothes. I wanted to create a reflex tape and other reflex products both for children and adults, which should be both functional and easy to put on. My goal became to make reflexes for everyone, for children, for teenagers, for adults and for grandparents, for the dog - so everyone can move confidently about and light up in the dark.
