Alison Art Cyanotypes provides handmade original photography for beauty seekers who value surrounding themselves with handcrafted materials to create lively, enriched, and inspired spaces. I make camera-less photographs (cyanotypes) of local plants for home décor. With the cyanotype process, I create textiles, cards, reproduction/art prints, and original cyanotype pieces. A cyanotype is a photographic print that results in a beautiful Prussian blue color. I say they are 'camera-less' photographs because I coat light sensitive chemistry on paper and through a contact printing or photogram process I make the images. My subject matter is plant life (and some fauna) growing in the Midwest. My work reflects the seasons, our relationship to nature, and our shared sense of place. I've been making cyanotypes since studying photography as an undergraduate student and have revisited the process on and off for years since then. After making cyanotypes on fabric for my wedding, I started working consistently with the process. Usually my printing starts in the spring with my Spring Blooms series. These pieces are of the first blooms of spring such as magnolias, forsythia, etc. Then I continue to print plants throughout the growing season. Sometimes I recreate the landscapes to show the season, other times I explore pattern work, damask patterns, or explore how plants grow. I am always experimenting in the studio.
