About Trees Have Feelings

Trees Have Feelings® began as a way to not lose my mind. After a 30-year career as a Hollywood television writer and producer, I found myself in yet another work environment that was dark and unsustainable. To cope, I started doodling on my Staples desk calendar—without any plan, and without any realization that I could draw. Out of those chaotic lines, trees emerged. Then another. More arrived with a name, a personality, and a story that revealed itself as I drew. I brought the first tree home and, like a kid, put it on the refrigerator. My husband saw something in it and saved it. Soon there were dozens. Then hundreds. That same year, I left television, and my husband left his career. Together, we followed the trees to Washington. Then Covid hit. In that quiet, uncertain time, we built what would become Trees Have Feelings®. What began as a way to survive became a growing forest of emotions—funny, tender, awkward, brave—each one reflecting something deeply human. And again and again, people see them and say, “That one is me.” My work has connected with thousands of people at art festivals and farmers markets—from Bellingham, Washington, to Tubac, Arizona.Read their story
