Kella L. Vangsness is an artist and scientist based in Los Angeles, California. Her background in art, psychology and scientific research lends a unique perspective to painted and illustrated works. The inspiration for her playful pop-art depictions of cell biology came from her graduate school work with stem cells and textbook illustrations. This six-part acrylic series uses pop-art and a comic book style to highlight the innovation of stem cells. The vibrant colors aim to evoke ideals of invincibility and inspiration by fusing the beauty of art and this new biological science. Her work has been featured in medical publications, online magazines and curated shows. The original collection resides in the Eli and Edythe Broad CIRM Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at University of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine.
