Zach has been creating functional art for several years now, specializing in handmade sand clocks made from marble, live edge hardwoods and metal. His designs are carefully thought out and produced by hand, so every piece gets meticulous attention to detail. A black swan is used to describe an extremely rare event that; is unpredictable, carries a massive impact, and is often inappropriately rationalized after the fact with the benefit of hindsight. The name for this phenomenon originated because prior to 1697, a black swan had not been seen in Western civilization, and it was believed that the creature did not exist. The term was then adopted to describe situations of impossibility. I was intrigued with this concept and chose the name Blackswan Hourglass to represent my time pieces. Zach’s creations are a result of idle time and a desire to make something that couldn’t be found. When his job as a mobile crane operator began to slow, he started getting creative in his spare time using his past skills of welding, fabricating, and an appreciation for efficient design. Through various inspirations including nature, architecture, music, and family, Zach has been able to redesign the simple elegance of the hourglass and continues to produce his eclectic designs with new ideas as time goes on.
