Bathsheba Beverages sorrel is based on a recipe handed down from my grandmother who was born in St. George Parish in Barbados. Dellie,(Nana, to me, don't you know) emigrated to the United States, Brooklyn specifically, in the early 1900s and with her sisters and brother forged her way, along with many others as part of the first wave of newcomers from the West Indies. While sorrel is a favorite drink across the Caribbean, it was hard to come by beyond the islands until recently. I remember it being a rare treat growing up, available only when relatives made a trip 'home' and brought the dried buds back tucked among letters from family and special souvenirs for us 'New York' children.Read their story
