Description
The first cannery on the Skeena River, and the first north of the Fraser River, Inverness Cannery was built in 1876, closed in 1950 and fully destroyed by fire in 1973. ABOUT INVERNESS CANNERY Unlike other canneries, Inverness was very much a Ts'msyen cannery, with more than 80% of employees being Ts'msyen men, women and boys. Ts'msyen literally means "People of the Skeena" and they have fished this river for countless millennia. "The northern canning industry was quite literally built upon the traditional fisheries of the Ts’mysen," according to anthropologists Charles Menzies and Caroline F. Butler. The Inverness passage is traditionally known as Wilałoo, "The Place of Landslides" in Sm'algyax.
