The original recipe is attributed to Count Charles Grey (1764-1845). Either he would have created it himself, having received a bergamot fruit that he tried in the tea he was drinking, or it was his servant who would have taken the initiative to add a slice of bergamot to his master's tea, to mask a mediocre black tea, or water that tasted bad. There are still many other variants of this story, which contribute to making Earl Grey a legendary tea. Having become Prime Minister, Charles Grey had no trouble in making his favorite tea shine among all British people. Two tea houses took over and promoted it worldwide. Now a symbol of the famous “Tea Time” (or “Five O'Clock Tea”) and of an entire population, the delicious Earl Grey must be drunk with the little finger in the air.
