The root and stem bark of the barberry can be used to make a decoction to help with digestive issues and travellers' diarrhoea. The decoction can also be used to treat wounds and cuts topically. The antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and immune-stimulating alkaloid berberine is contained in barberry and is responsible for the yellow colour.
