This mushroom artwork is featured on the Five of Wands tarot card in the Mushroom Hunter’s Tarot Deck. Often found in leaf litter or mulch, this unusual mushroom looks like something straight out of science fiction. First appearing as an egg, this early stage is shortly followed by red octopus-like arms unfurling up and outward. In maturity, it smells of rotting flesh — you’re likely to smell it long before you see it. Its putrid scent is not meant to keep us away, but instead to attract flies which will spread its spores across greater distances.
