Recognized in 2001, the Scuppernong Grape is a native variety of muscadine grape and the first actively cultivated grape in the United States. Named after the Scuppernong River, these large, bronze-hued grapes were prized by early settlers and Indigenous peoples alike for their sweet flavor and winemaking potential. Grown across eastern North Carolina, the scuppernong continues to celebrate the state’s agricultural roots and historical significance in American viticulture.
