In 1989 our founder, Sharon Rowe, saw the single-use plastic bag trash littering the streets of New York City as a challenge she could take on. She wanted to create a starting point for people to live life more mindfully. Her solution? A reusable bag, ethically handmade with sustainable materials. We launched on Earth Day, 1990, with the ECOBAGS Original Cotton String Bag. With this classic European-style net market bag in hand, Sharon helped spark the conversation on single-use plastic bag pollution and provided a starting point for many people's sustainable journeys. We remain committed to helping end single-use plastic pollution by providing a reusable, sustainable alternative. All of our bags are handmade by our partners of 30+ years with certified fair wage and trade standards.
