Opossum Didelphis Virginiana Also known as the Virginia Opossum, with a range that extends from Central America to Canada, this is the northernmost marsupial in the world. Opossums are nocturnal and often found in settled areas near a food source. If you find one near your home, do not worry! They are omnivorous and are known to eat nearly every tick they encounter. When frightened, they will often flee or try to appear threatening, though, in states of extreme fear, Opossums will feign death. The name Opossum comes from an Algonquin word, wapathemwa, meaning: "white dog" or "white beast." Opossums have an unusually short lifespan of only two years; four years in captivity. They are nocturnal creatures that range in size from a cat to a raccoon, so your best chance to see them is likely late at night near your trash cans. If you're lucky, you might see a female Opossum's young offspring clinging to her back as the mother carries them around.
