The thistle is the oldest national flower in the world and it earned that role by thwarting a Norse invasion in Scotland; while some Scottish warriors were asleep for the night, their Norse adversaries slipped off their boots to sneak up on the unsuspecting Scotsmen but one unfortunate bootless sneaker had the bad luck to step barefoot on a thistle, letting out a cry of pain the warrior had alerted the sleeping Scots who managed to defend their homeland.
