La Benjamine is a pure combed wool. The term wool refers to sheep's wool. Once sheared, the wool is sorted and then washed to remove plant debris and suint (animal grease). Combed wool is of higher quality than carded wool. Combing retains only the long fibers, the most beautiful, the most noble. The wool ribbon passes through a succession of combs to eliminate short fibers (which cause pilling) and remove impurities. After being combed and then divided into strands, the wool is twisted into yarn.
