Description
Balbriggan is renowned for its lighthouse, which is the second oldest active one in Ireland - only Hook Head beats it. In 1762, Baron George Hamilton commissioned a limestone pier and in 1769, the lighthouse was added. In 1860, Rockabill lighthouse was established, transforming Balbriggan from a sea light to a minor harbour light. The removal of the glass and brass dome of the lighthouse has caused consternation to the local population for many a year. However, thanks to the efforts of Fingal County Council in 2017, the lighthouse is now fully restored with its dome back in place.
