Bridging art & science Sienna Cenere is a scientific artist and biologist in North Portland creating artwork exploring the hidden nature of the biological world by meticulously hand drawing her subjects with the fundamental forces and chemical reactions that govern their form and function. Instead of traditional shading, she creates each image by repeatedly writing meaningful data by hand to form the composition, such as the chemical composition and age of the Grand Canyon’s strata, or the Hz frequency of a whale's song. This method, which she calls Numberism, is similar to stippling, but instead of dots, she draws with numbers and equations that describe the subject itself. Each piece is based on extensive research and takes 50-100 hours to draw. Sienna offers fine art reproductions and screen printed clothing of her designs, which she produces with a small team. The final products come with descriptions of the scientific story written for the general public. Read their story
