About Cantina Sandonna

In the early sixties, Enrico Paciacconi was a master cooper. He selected wood, mainly chestnut and cherry, to produce barrels. Franco, Enrico's son, planted the first vineyard in the eighties. Even today, he continues the family's woodworking tradition, but he is more often found in the vineyard and cellar producing his wine. It was up to Alessandro, the third generation, to take on the family tradition and start the "bottle project," giving this transition his personal touch: producing wines that represent the territory with a completely "natural" approach in the vineyard and cellar. We are in an enchanted place near Amelia, the oldest city in Umbria, on the Sandonna plateau, from which the winery takes its name. We are between the Tiber River and the hills that begin to transform into the Apennine mountains. Three selections of Ciliegiolo (two reds and one rosé) and a Grechetto are the winery's calling card, which, in recent years, has invested heavily in the development of these native varieties, especially Ciliegiolo. Two powerful and velvety Montepulciano remind us that this versatile grape variety has been present in this territory for many decades. Organic cultivation in the vineyard, fermentations only with indigenous yeasts, the use of cement in the cellar for fermentations and aging, respect for the land and its fruits are the foundation of Sandonna's production.
