About Cassandra Scanlon Studio
I am a ceramic artist and lecturer inspired by traditional and contemporary forms to create functional objects that evoke natural splendor and embody simplicity and comfort. My work is crafted using a blend of both traditional and digital techniques. When it comes to functional, food-safe products like dinnerware, I focus on wheel throwing and hand-building. These methods allow for precision and a personal touch that are essential in creating everyday items. In contrast, some decorative pieces such as Vista Vases are made using slip casting. This technique entails 3D modeling the forms and then producing custom production molds from 3D prints, enabling intricate designs and ensuring consistent quality in each piece. A large component of my work isexploring Neriage and Nerikomi pottery techniques in porcelain and stoneware to create finishes inspired by the natural, ephemeral colors and textures found in the land, sky, and sea. I feel these techniques allow each piece to be unique despite the repetition in the making process, both on and off the wheel. It captures the maker's impression in clay and can be a reflection or embodiment of time and memory.
