Alliteration always attracts attention. Hence the modernist architect Louis Sullivan’s dictum that “form follows function” persuades us by simple force of rhetoric. Upon deeper reflection we have to acknowledge that the observation is almost tautologically true. But at we adhere to another dictum: imagination inspires elation. Of course, the form is important and the function imperative, but at we’d like to speak up for whimsy, for surface decoration, for the bump, nub, and squiggle of life. We champion the object that is so much fun to touch, observe, or play with that we resolve to find a function that is suitable.
