About The Canyon Collective

My name is Karen Silverman and I'm the artist behind The Canyon Collective. I focus on natural history as a medium and use ethically sourced butterflies from women-owned butterfly farms around the world. The wings are pressed in glass frames, pendants and jars and can last as heirlooms for generations if kept out of direct sunlight. These pieces can serve as a reminder of the beauty of transformation. The farms focus on conservation efforts of the rainforest and species they raise. These butterflies have passed from natural causes in lush tropical aviaries and are gathered by farmers once their cycle is complete. These frames honor the life of the butterfly while ensuring their future offspring will thrive on this planet. The money earned by these farmers allows for them to step out of poverty, send their children to school, create generational wealth and many women use the money from farming as seed money for their other business endeavors. They are paid well for their time and efforts. All pieces are made here by me in my Los Angeles studio.
