About Emma Make

Emma, is an English and Mozambican designer from Cambridge, UK, living and working in Lisbon, Portugal. Emma Make is her proudly black-owned business which specialises in physical goods to brighten people's lives and homes. The biggest joy in her work is colour. The process involved usually centres around mixing analogue and digital methods. Subjects are generally drawn from nature, such as; imagined or real African landscapes, wildflowers and animals. Her travels growing up and Mozambican heritage may have also contributed to these interests. The main goal of Emma's work is to honour life through beauty; something she has learnt from her studies in African art. However, this is usually subverted with unexpected colour combinations and playfully naive forms. In doing so Emma hopes to keep her work fresh and contemporary. Sustainability is important to Emma Make, and almost all prints use paper sourced from Hemp or recycled material. Emma also works with GOTS organic cotton to create her beautiful and popular scarves and aprons. Emma also sources manufacturing processes in Portugal and Europe to create products such as her screen prints (which are made by local Portuguese printers), Risographs and tailor-sewn textiles.Read their story
