My first real taste of woodworking was in my friend, Tim's, shop. Tim runs the Guild of American Luthiers and invited me over to build a cigar box ukulele. Over the next couple months I fell in love with the craft. To build our ukuleles we used reclaimed siding off of Tim's house. I absolutely loved the idea that this bit of wood had lived for hundreds of years as a tree in the forest, another few decades as siding on a house, and now we were able to give it a third life as a ukulele. There is something so fulfilling about bringing something into being that wouldn't have otherwise existed, and I was hooked. A few years went by and I hadn't really made enough time for woodworking. When the Pandemic happened, I suddenly had a lot more time on my hands. I built some garden beds for my wife, and, quick as that, the fire was relit. I started slowly acquiring more tools and taught myself new techniques by watching hours (and hours and hours) of Youtube videos. Eventually we moved into a new house with space for a permanent shop. About the same time as I was building out my shop I started selling a few things here and there. In 2022 I made it official and started Ash & Cedar Woodworking. Since then I’ve done quite a few craft fairs and maker’s markets and built commissions for friends and local businesses. I’ve recently been really enjoying making jewelry, so I've started selling some of my designs online. I’m excited to see how this hobby-turned-business can continue to grow!Read their story
