Our luxury candle encompasses the stellar, regal, and elegant classy aesthetic of the family name that preceded the brand. Conceptualized by Maria, the granddaughter of Dr. James L. Bass and his wife Madame Maria White, and their memorable legacy, Bass & Co. Candles is an extension of this respected and well-known family name. During the early 20th century, when minorities were still subject to segregation, were socially disadvantaged, and struggled to access health services, Dr. James L. Bass stepped up to meet the needs of his community through providing low-cost and often, free dental services to those he served. His affiliations and memberships were endless. His heart was that of a giver, having helped countless neighbors and their children. He and his wife, Maria experienced lots of growth and became part of many prestigious social circles. However, Mr. & and Mrs.Bass’ devoted efforts towards philanthropy and community service is what fulfilled them. The owner, Maria Kemp, MPH, Dr. Bass' granddaughter has carried the baton of service through her entrepreneurial endeavor as a candlemaker and her profession as a health researcher. They are not just candles, but they are a public health mission. This creative concept is intended to serve as a tool to be used to reduce trauma, anxiety, stress, and other adverse psychological effects that stem from abuse, and any other negative socioeconomic conditions that are prevalent and yet, stigmatized in black communities.Read their story
