We left on our first offshore passage with $37.50 to our name — everything sold to provision the boat. We spent the better part of 2004 at sea, fishing the reef with spear guns and selling artwork along the way, making it work on nothing but skill and salt water. The only thing we couldn't catch or make ourselves was soap that would lather in the ocean. Dawn dish soap was the only thing that worked. We made a note. Years later, we made sure our own never failed that test. Every bar has been formulated to lather in salt water. That voyage taught her eldest son, Kyle, to read the water before he could read a chart. He is now a full-time captain in the Virgin Islands, showing others how to fall in love with the ocean and islands the way he did. Danita, a lifelong sailor and captain, co-founded this company with her son Dolton, who is blind. Dolton hand-Brailles every label himself, one dot at a time, on a Perkins Brailler — because if he cannot read it independently, it is not finished. Every bar is cold-processed from certified grass-fed tallow and certified organic oils, scented only with pure botanical essential oils. No synthetic fragrance, ever.
