About Bacata

Hello, my name is Maria Rojas and I'm the founder of Bacata. I'm a Colombian girl who immigrated to Canada 11 years ago. With my mom, Ailén, we founded Bacata in 2021. Concerned about the negative impact of animal exploitation on animals and our planet, we wanted to contribute positively through our work and entrepreneurial spirit. This is how Bacata was born: from the dream of offering better alternatives to those who want to consume better. At first, we decided to make vegan alternatives to products that are normally made from animal leather, but we noticed that most vegan leathers are made from PVC, a toxic plastic that loses its beauty very fast, generating a high rotation and therefore pollution. Committed to our first intention we decided these materials were not a match for our brand. This is why we do our creations exclusively with plant-based leathers, by far a better alternative to PVC leathers and animal leather in terms of animal welfare and ecological impact. We're currently working with cactus leather, and we'll soon be integrating pineapple and apple leather to our catalog. Before Bacata, I worked 4 years in the fashion industry and I learned the good and the dark side of this industry. I saw how fast fast-fashion really goes. This brings us to our third commitment: creating timeless designs that will last over time and respect the principles of slow fashion. I'd be glad to see our creations in your boutique or business.
