At 40 Acre we live life uncharted. We are Brighty and Kevin Norman, the creators and owners of the brand 40 Acre Candle & Gift Co. In 2017 after giving birth to our daughter and learning the next day that she was Deaf or hard of hearing, we knew our lives were about to change forever. Both working in corporate settings with very busy schedules we knew I (Brighty) was going to have to reduce my work load to support learning about our daughter's loss of hearing, services, and what felt like endless doctors appointments. June 2019, to support my reduced work hours I started testing candles to eventually start a side business. March 2020 during the first month of the Covid 19 government shutdown, we both lost our jobs within a month of each other. We were devastated. In survival mode, I turned my hobby into a business. We grew a following around our woodsy and rustic inspired home fragrance at local markets and events. January 2024 we hit another bump in the road. Our Deaf daughter was feeling the absence of people similar to her, unsupported and outcasted by the administration and kids at school. I once again immersed myself into learning about hearing loss, ASL & Deaf communities. I found that our gifted daughter needed to go somewhere with a larger Deaf community. Our hearts lead us to Rochester NY. Here I found the courage and inspiration to relaunch the business and share our inspiration of living on our own terms, uncharted and wildly full of love and adventure.
