Kyoto Makotoya – Mindful Leather Craft from Kyoto [ Our Heritage ] Kyoto Makotoya is a Kyoto-based leather brand operated by Tanigawa Co., Ltd., with manufacturing roots dating back to 1975. For decades, we worked as an OEM workshop, building deep expertise in materials and craftsmanship for various brands. Today, we channel that accumulated knowledge into our own original DIY kits. [ Materials & Making ] Our kits use premium cowhide leather from Himeji, a region world-renowned for its thousand-year tanning tradition. While the leather itself comes from Himeji, every kit is carefully designed and produced in our Kyoto workshop. This balance between material heritage and place of making reflects our approach to honoring tradition within contemporary life. [ The Philosophy of “Engimono” ] Inspired by Engimono—traditional Japanese lucky charms such as goldfish and owls—our products are more than simple craft projects. Through the quiet act of stitching and assembling, each piece becomes a mindful ritual, shaped by focus, care, and intention.
