About Spru-Seal

Spru-Seal was born out of personal necessity, intrigue and determination after my first winter in Colorado working at the Breckenridge Nordic Center. The dry, cold elements really took a toll on my knuckles and fingertips from all the handwashing, working inside the lodge as a bartender and then helping guests into their snowshoes and tricky Nordic ski bindings outside in the snow. I studied biomedical sciences in college, and so I turned my snowshoe hikes into a sort of winter survival naturalist tour of the wetlands environment behind the ski lodge. Every plant you see above the snow all winter long has medicinal and/or nutritional value! I would introduce the guests to all the specific visual details and dramatic variations in aroma between the different evergreen species. And it was the guests from all over the world who clued me into the profound connection that we share with the SPRUCE. I'd crush the needles in my fingertips and watch as each hiker sniffed and then took a deeper, full lung inhalation before melting away with their eyes closed, letting out an audibly satisfied "Mmmmmm!" So with that clue in mind, one day out on the trail while sharing with a group about the traditionally medicinal uses of evergreen sap, I looked at my relentlessly cracked knuckle and took the dangling droplet of spruce sap, shimmering in the afternoon sunlight and warmed it between my fingers before spreading it over the wound.
