Charlene Bendu Dunbar is the owner and creative director of suakoko betty (pronounced SWAH-koko), a clothing brand inspired by modern African design and art lovers. Charlene was born in Liberia, moved to Atlanta when she was 11 as a civil war refugee and went on to study engineering at Georgia Tech and then fashion design at AIU. Growing up in a mash-up of American and Liberian cultures became the origin story for suakoko betty, whose mission is to celebrate West African design & culture by weaving it into everyday style. suakoko betty's accomplishments include being carried in Belk stores as a Southern Design Showcase winner, being featured in major brand collaborations including Ford and Cantu and helping women embrace their inner artist. suakoko betty recently developed and launched its first full hand-dyed batik collection in collaboration with Nigerian textile artists. Charlene loves spending time with her family, cooking foodie-inspired meals and dancing.Read their story
