About The Plastic Bag

Hi, I’m Matt Greenwood, a northerner living in Margate. I’m a photographer and visual artist. The Plastic Bag is an ongoing project I began in 2015, photographing my archive of plastic bags. My photographs are playful, sculptural and evoke memories. The Plastic Bag started as my simple curiosity about the designs on plastic bags, but it’s grown into something much bigger. So far, I’ve collected over 1,500 single-use bags from around the world. What began as a small obsession with their design has become a bigger exploration of sustainability, waste, and the everyday things we overlook. Since moving to Margate, the project has taken on a more personal meaning. Living this close to the sea has made me much more aware of the impact of plastic waste, and it’s made me want to start conversations about it. To some people, a plastic bag will always be a plastic bag, and that’s fine. But for me, it’s something worth a closer look. Through this project, I want to show you how I see them: as tiny time capsules, bits of design history, and quiet reflections of the world we live in.Read their story
