When I was growing up art, was vital. It gave me an outlet & a focus outside of the chaos I knew as home. It allowed me to create a connection to myself & express what was important to me when there was no one there to see or hear me. Art helped me access a sense of home within. When everything around me felt hopeless & overwhelming, all I had to turn to was my imagination. Recognizing this ability & establishing that foundation within has continued to assist me throughout my entire life. I believe we all have the capacity to heal & process our adverse experiences through art & other ways of coming home to ourselves. We can establish our own sense of comfort & belonging when it’s not guaranteed elsewhere. We can refocus our attention & use our imagination as an act of resistance against the harmful effects of misguided authority. We can use it as a form of reclamation of the freedom over our minds. No one can ever truly take that from us if we understand & remember our full power. I’m here to remind you of that. In the words of one of my favorite bands, “Art is the weapon.
