Brooklyn Heavy Metal is a line of raw yet refined handmade jewelry. Founded in 2009 by designer Abbi Stern in the heart of Gowanus, Brooklyn BHM is inspired by the gritty downtown punk rock scene of 70s and 80s New York City. By channeling her pastoral upbringing through a rock n’ roll lens the designer works primarily with natural materials, many of which have been discovered in the woods near her childhood home in Vermont. Using everything from bones to bark to tentacles and transforming these organic materials into metal, she has created a line of jewelry that, in true punk rock form, refuses to fall in line with fashion’s ever-changing trends. Through the designer’s unique creative process, Brooklyn Heavy Metal reinvents “timeless, classic” jewelry that’s equally avant-garde. ABOUT THE DESIGNER: Abbi was born in Vermont, raised in NYC. After 20+ years she felt called back to her VT roots where she resides again today. It was her time in NYC where she fully immersed herself in the fashion, art, and music she read about in her grandmother’s fashion Magazines as a child. While jobs in beauty, retail, publishing, theater, and fashion may not have been the right fit, these experiences led her back to one of her original passions: jewelry. She quickly fell even more in love with the creative process itself. It was there in her studio that she discovered the ability to make seemingly inanimate objects come to life.Read their story
