Renowned artist, Mercedes Rivera, born in Jayuya, Puerto Rico, started exhibiting her works at her New Mexico galleries, Native Art and The Pottery Studio. Her pottery reflects both a traditional and contemporary influence while developing a variety of shapes and sizes that carry their own personality. Combining her love for pets and passion for pottery Mercedes created a variety of abstract cat and dog sculptures, treat jars, sports jars and bowls, and introduced the Mercedes Collection of jeweled dog collars. In 2015 Mercedes took an hiatus to enjoy the Florida beach life and reflect on a new direction for her art which led to reconnecting with her Puerto Rican roots creating Vejigante paper mache masks. Vejigante Masks A Vejigante is a clown-like character in Hispanic Caribbean festival celebrations (mainly seen in Carnival time). Traditional colors of the Vejigantes are black, red, white, and yellow. Vejigante masks are made by soaking paper with a mixture of flour and glue applying to an aluminum foil mask mold. Multiple layers of paper allow for a strong base. Shapes and sizes of horns are then created using the soaked paper and attached to the mask mold. Once dry the mask is ready to be painted with a variety of colors and designs.
