My first memory with tea was in a farm shed, late ‘70s. I would have been about 5 years old. My job was to help Mum make the cuppa tea for staff working the hop harvest. The tea was Choysa Earl Grey loose-leaf tea, stored in large wooden boxes we had to pry open with a crow bar. The quality was rough compared with today but the aroma, packaging, and experience are an ever-lasting memory for me. Growing up in Aotearoa, when I wasn’t at school or working on the farm I was in the great outdoors. I developed a taste for our ngahere (forest), learning about it from my solo expeditions into the wilderness as well as from hunters, elders, and books. Later I went on to travel exotic countries, tasting wild teas and listening to the stories connected with them. This sparked my desire to come home to learn Rongoā Māori. Now I want to share my journey with you, fellow tea lover. My international teas are sourced from sustainable farms, my wild harvest teas are picked by either myself, whanau, or well-known growers in Aotearoa. Our plants will teach us everything we need to know – we just need to listen. Noho ora mai, Annette.
