I wanted to develop a process to make consistently the 5 inch spherical treasure containers. Many similar products are hand turned on a lathe and are not quite spherical and tend to be costly. My method assures a consistent process and the best use of material minimizing waste. This process is also applied to the 3, 4 and 7.5 inch versions. The segmented versions are labor intensive but produce a beautiful product. When held in your hands and rotated the light catches the wood grain differently producing changing light and dark appearance. The effect is quite striking. The equipment I use is a modified lathe and machinist stages. I have written instructions to assure each step is followed. It has been a daunting process of discovery as I had to learn machining characteristics of different species of hardwoods. I also wanted to select a suitable finish to provide lasting beauty.
