The Flop That Became DoodleFace: From NO to WOW "No, I don't want your things on my wall." These words from my daughter revealed a truth: children's wall art wasn't really for children. The decorations I'd chosen hung above her sight, offering her no ownership of or happiness in her space. After searching stores and finding nothing that could be uniquely hers and that she would truly enjoy, I created wooden zoo animals — beautiful, but still my creation, not hers. The solution evolved: special dry-erase crayons, custom-coated characters, a snap mechanism for removal, and manufacturing in Upstate New York. Surprisingly, children didn't just color DoodleFace—they carried them everywhere like their favorite toy and playmate. This led to DoodleFace Play characters: smaller figures children could color, erase, and reinvent. We discovered a profound truth: play becomes magical when children can transform their toys with their own imagination rather than using completed toys designed entirely by adults. People loved the way the DoodleFace crayons weren’t messy yet wiped away like magic with the eraser cloth. They requested us to create crayon boards (a solution to the frustration of dry-erase boards for kids), so we did.
