History of Hecky's Barbecue Hecky's Barbecue opened on October 13, 1983, in Evanston, Illinois where it is still located. Hecky's quickly became famous for its barbecue sauce and foods, including ribs, rib tips, and chicken. "It's the Sauce" is the restaurant's motto and the proprietary sauce is sold in the restaurant and at 25 independent stores. The restaurant recipes come from Hecky's New Orleans 'Creole grandmother, who passed them down to his mother and then to him. The barbecue sauce and the food have won numerous awards over the restaurant’s 40+ year history.
