The word “mandala” comes from the Sanskrit word for “circle” or “universe.” Sacred circles and mandala-like forms can be found throughout the world and across diverse spiritual traditions. They are used for focusing the mind, for healing rituals, and as powerful symbols. Carl Jung believed that people are universally drawn to mandalas. He used them with his patients and many therapists continue to use them today. I began drawing mandalas as a meditation and mindfulness practice. They require me to center myself and help me stay there. Mandalas speak to me of interconnectedness: the ways our past, present and future are entwined, the relationships between our mind, body and spirit, and the interdependence of all living things. I draw my mandalas freehand, usually with pen on paper, sometimes with paint or ink on canvas, eggs or some other surface that has grabbed my attention. I often capture a digital image of my drawing and then create colorful backgrounds for those images. These make wonderful prints, bookmarks and magnets.
